Why do some people succeed at their goals (publish that book, launch that business, earn that degree, or get that promotion) and others seem to falter as they chase their dreams and ultimately fail to achieve them?
The answer lies in the difference between Self-Discipline and Motivation.
Self-Discipline will beat motivation every single time.
Motivation helps you do things when you want to do them. Self-Discipline makes you do things even when you don’t feel like it.
As Hall of Fame Football Player Emmitt Smith said “All athletes are created equal. Some just train harder in the off season.”
In order to create powerful and consistent Self-Discipline, first you need to understand what Self-Discipline really is. Chances are you have some negative programming around the word, so let’s break it down.
The root word of “Discipline” is “Disciple” which is defined as “A loyal follower or student of a teacher or leader.” So, what does it mean to have Self-Discipline or to be a Disciple of Your Self?
To be a Disciple of Your Self, means to be a loyal follower or student of your own dreams, desires and aspirations. It means showing up for yourself just as consistently as you show up for others.
I know many people who can show up on time for a study group or an exercise class because others are expecting them to be there, but they can’t show up on time for their own, independent study or exercise sessions, because they don’t value themselves in the same way they value others. Similarly, I know many failing authors and business owners who consistently show up on time for writing workshops or for work with their employees, but who fail to show up consistently for their own, independent writing or business development sessions. And, of course, then there’s the parents: they show up on time for every school day and event, every sports practice and recital for their child, and consistently fail to show up for themselves, for their own self-care, pursuits, and interests.
So first, we must realize that we are worth it. We are worth the effort. Our dreams and desires are worth the time and expense and energy it will take to achieve them, because we deserve to experience and express that best version of ourselves. And we are worth, at least as much, or more, than others. Next, after you have realized that you have a powerful desire, dream or goal and that you are worthy of achieving it, you need to install the Self-Discipline that will get you there.
Here is how you do that:
As Abraham Lincoln said (we share the same birthday February 12 by the way, an interesting coincidence, or not) “If you are going to give me five hours to chop down a tree, I will spend the first four sharpening my axe.” The point he is making, of course, is that performance is dictated by preparation.
If you plan your work well, then all you have to do, is work your plan. The plan does the work for you.
The Plan, and the motivational strategies I will teach you, as you make that plan, will create all the Self-Discipline you need.
Then, all you have to do is follow your own lead, be a disciple or your self and your plan, and let your plan do the work for you until you are living the life of your dreams!
